AI/ML does really well for problems that we understand fairly well, there is huge amount of data for, and where the cost of errors is low.
More likely, AI systems will compliment human work making us more efficient. As someone who has invested a lot of time, money, and effort into my education and career, I’m afraid of what the future might hold.Ĭompanies that don't replace customer service with AI will have that leverage against companies who do, just like "US-based customer service" today. We can’t just stand by and watch as AI advances at breakneck speeds, without considering the potential impact it might have on human lives and careers.
I don’t know what the answer is, but I do know that it’s a conversation we need to be having. Meanwhile, I and other college-educated professionals are left wondering whether our jobs will exist in a decade, or whether we’ll be ousted by robots and algorithms. It’s difficult not to feel like a pawn in a much larger game, one that’s being played out by tech companies and investors who have the resources to push the boundaries of AI. It raises questions about how long my skills and expertise will remain valuable, and whether I need to start acquiring new ones in order to stay relevant. Knowing that machine learning algorithms and other AI technologies are constantly evolving and becoming more sophisticated is a daunting thought. As someone who worked hard to earn a college degree and establish a career in my field, I can’t help but feel anxious about the potential impact of AI on my job security.
